Carver CX vs C7: Which Truck System Should You Choose?

The Carver CX is a bushing truck for stability and all-round use; the C7 is a spring truck for deep carving and surf training. Compare specs, ride feel, and boards.

The Carver CX is a bushing-based reverse kingpin truck designed for stability, all-round surfskating, and bowl riding (26 boards in our catalog). The Carver C7 is a spring-loaded truck with a swivel arm designed for deep carving, surf training, and pumping (8 boards). Both share a 25° pivot angle, but the CX turns progressively via compressed bushings while the C7 snaps back via an internal spring. Choose the CX for stability and versatility; choose the C7 for the closest feel to surfing. Compare them side by side in our truck comparison tool.

The core difference

The CX and C7 look similar from the outside but work in fundamentally different ways:

  • CX: Uses polyurethane bushings to control the turn. When you lean, the bushings compress gradually. When you release, they push back slowly. The turn is progressive and predictable.
  • C7: Uses a metal spring and swivel arm. When you lean, the spring compresses. When you release, it snaps back to center. The turn is dynamic and surf-like.

This single mechanical difference creates two very different riding experiences.

When to choose the CX

The CX is Carver’s most popular truck for a reason — it works well for almost everything.

Choose the CX if you:

  • Are a beginner learning to surfskate
  • Want one board that does everything (cruising, carving, bowl)
  • Prefer stability and predictability
  • Ride skateparks or bowls (stability in transitions is critical)
  • Want a lower price point

The CX uses the same bushing system as many other trucks, which means you can tune the feel by swapping bushings. Softer bushings = looser turns. Harder bushings = more stability. This adjustability makes the CX extremely versatile.

When to choose the C7

The C7 is Carver’s original surf truck and remains the gold standard for surf-like feel in a bushing-price truck.

Choose the C7 if you:

  • Want the deepest carves and most surf-like feel from Carver
  • Practice surf training (bottom turns, cutbacks, snaps)
  • Love pumping and want maximum efficiency
  • Are an intermediate or advanced rider
  • Prioritize surf feel over stability

The C7’s spring mechanism creates a “push-pull” rhythm that closely mimics paddling into a wave and carving across the face. This is why many surf coaches recommend C7-equipped boards for land training.

Ride feel: what the numbers don’t tell you

CX ride feel: Imagine leaning into a turn on a bicycle. The turn builds gradually, holds steady, and returns smoothly. You always feel in control. The CX rewards smooth, flowing riding but doesn’t punish hesitation.

C7 ride feel: Imagine the moment a wave catches your surfboard and propels you forward. There’s a dynamic push and return, a rhythm to the movement. The C7 rewards commitment — lean in fully and you get a deep, satisfying carve. Hesitate and the spring snaps back before you’re ready.

Can you swap CX for C7 (or vice versa)?

Yes. Both trucks use the same mounting hole pattern and are designed by Carver for interchangeability. You can buy a CX-equipped board and later swap to a C7 front truck, or vice versa. The rear truck (a standard Carver C2 or CX rear) works with either front truck.

Things to consider when swapping:

  • The C7 is taller than the CX, which raises your ride height slightly
  • You may need to adjust your bushings or spring tension after swapping
  • The wheelbase doesn’t change — only the front truck feel changes

Still unsure? The safe choice is always the CX — it’s more versatile and forgiving. You can always upgrade to the C7 later when you know what you want from your surfskate. For more help deciding, check our guide on choosing your first surfskate.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Carver C7 good for beginners?

The C7 is rideable for beginners but has a steeper learning curve than the CX. The spring mechanism feels loose and unpredictable until you learn to commit to your turns. Beginners who surf will adapt faster because the movement pattern is familiar. Non-surfers should start with the CX.

Is the CX or C7 better for pumping?

The C7 is generally better for pumping. The spring mechanism stores and returns energy more efficiently than bushings, making the pumping motion feel more natural and less effortful. However, the CX can also pump well — it just requires a slightly different technique with more knee drive.

Can I adjust the tightness of Carver trucks?

Yes. On the CX, you adjust the kingpin nut to compress the bushings more (tighter) or less (looser). You can also swap bushings for different hardnesses. On the C7, you adjust the spring tension via a bolt at the top of the swivel arm. Both systems allow fine-tuning to match your weight and riding preference.

How much do Carver trucks cost?

The CX front truck typically costs €70–90 as a standalone purchase. The C7 front truck costs €100–130. Complete surfskates with CX trucks range from €200–300, while C7 completes range from €250–350. Prices vary by model and retailer.

Which Carver truck is closest to surfing?

The C7 is closer to the feel of surfing because the spring mechanism creates a dynamic push-and-return that mimics wave energy. However, for the absolute closest surf feel, look at the Smoothstar Thruster (35° pivot angle) or SwellTech (45° pivot angle, 360° rotation). The C7 offers a good middle ground between surf feel and everyday usability.
