Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about surfskates, our comparison tools, and how we collect and verify specification data.
What is a surfskate?
A surfskate is a skateboard with a specialized front truck system that enables deep carving and surf-like turns on pavement. Unlike regular skateboards, surfskates use spring-loaded, pivot, or thrust-bearing mechanisms that allow the front axle to turn up to 45° or more, mimicking the feeling of surfing a wave.
What is the difference between a surfskate and a longboard?
The main difference is the front truck. Surfskates use a specialized truck system (like Carver CX, YOW Meraki, or Smoothstar Thruster) that allows extreme turning angles. Longboards use standard trucks designed for stability and downhill speed. Surfskates carve tighter, pump more easily, and feel more like surfing, while longboards excel at cruising long distances and downhill.
What surfskate is best for beginners?
For beginners, we recommend boards with a longer wheelbase (17"+) and a moderately responsive truck system like the Carver CX or Carver C7. These provide a good balance of surf-like feel without being too unstable. Use our catalog filter to find boards tagged as "Beginner" level.
Can I use a surfskate for surf training?
Yes, surfskates are widely used by surfers for land-based training. Boards with high pivot angle trucks (like Smoothstar Thruster at 35° or YOW Meraki) closely replicate surf movements: bottom turns, cutbacks, and pumping. Look for boards in the "Surf Trainer" category in our catalog.
What is wheelbase and why does it matter?
Wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear truck mounting holes. It is the single most important measurement on a surfskate. A shorter wheelbase (14"–16") gives snappier, tighter turns — ideal for technical surf training. A longer wheelbase (17"–19") offers more stability and flowing carves — better for beginners and cruising.
What does the front truck angle mean?
The front truck pivot angle determines how deep the truck can carve. Higher angles (30°–45°) produce deeper, more surf-like turns but require more balance. Lower angles (15°–25°) are more stable and predictable. Most dedicated surf trainers use angles above 30°.
What is the difference between Carver CX and C7 trucks?
The Carver CX is a reverse-kingpin truck with a fixed geometry — responsive but predictable, great for all levels. The Carver C7 adds a secondary spring-loaded pivot that allows the deck to swing more freely, producing a looser, more surf-like feel. The C7 is preferred for surf training; the CX is more versatile for everyday riding.
What wheel durometer should I choose?
For surfskates, most wheels range from 78A to 83A. Softer wheels (78A) provide more grip and a smoother ride on rough pavement. Harder wheels (83A) slide more easily and roll faster on smooth surfaces. For general carving and cruising, 78A–80A is the most popular range.
How much does a surfskate cost?
Complete surfskates range from approximately $80 for budget brands to $350+ for premium setups from Carver, YOW, or Smoothstar. Most quality complete boards fall in the $150–$280 range. You can filter by price in our catalog to find boards within your budget.
How do I compare surfskates on SurfSkate.app?
Go to the Compare page and select up to 3 boards. You will see a side-by-side table with all specifications, radar charts comparing geometry, bar charts for individual specs, and a foot-on-board visualizer to check stance fit. You can also share your comparison via a URL link.
Can I filter surfskates by specific specs?
Yes. The catalog page offers filters for brand, truck system, category, wheelbase range, and year. You can also search by model name. The table columns are sortable by clicking the column headers.
Where does your specification data come from?
We collect specs from official manufacturer websites, brand catalogs, authorized retailers, and verified community sources. Each specification is cross-referenced against multiple sources when possible. Our data covers geometry (wheelbase, deck length, width), truck specs (pivot angle, type), and wheel specs (diameter, durometer, contact patch).
How often is the data updated?
We update our database whenever manufacturers release new models or updated specifications. The "Data last verified" date shown on the catalog page indicates when the dataset was last reviewed. New boards are typically added within days of their official announcement.
Is SurfSkate.app affiliated with any brand?
SurfSkate.app is an independent project. We are not owned by or affiliated with any surfskate manufacturer. Our comparison data is objective and based solely on published specifications. Some product links may be affiliate links, which help support the site at no extra cost to you.
How do I suggest a board or correction?
Use our contact page to submit new board suggestions, specification corrections, or any other feedback. We review all submissions and update our database accordingly.
